Maca, the unknown super food

You might have noticed the exotic product named "maca" appear in your health food store.  Wonder what it is?  Keep on reading.  Maca powder comes from the Maca plant, which is native to Peru.  It is a cruciferous vegetable from the carrot, radish and parsnip family and has been cultivated and used by the Peruvians for several thousand years for its medicinal properties.

Maca contains over 50 beneficial phyto-chemicals (non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties), which include hormone precursors and nutrients proven to enhance human health.  It is also a rich source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and all the essential amino acids.  Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and very few foods contain the 8 essential ones that our body does not produce.  Thumbs up to the maca plant.

In addition to its impressive nutrient content above, Maca is known for its ability to help enhance strength and endurance.  It helps to build energy, muscle and stamina, overcome fatigue, improve mental ability and concentration, and improve mood.  Maca is particularly nourishing for the hormonal system and helps balance irregularities.  Finally, it stimulates the immune system and blood circulation.  All that goodness in a convenient powder form.

I add it to my superfood smoothie. How about you?
